What do Superman and Jesus Have in Common?

Tuesday June 27, 2006
According to Stephen Skelton, author of The Gospel According to the World's Greatest Superhero, the parallels between Superman and Jesus Christ are no accident, but rather, designed on purpose by the Superman TV show and movie storytellers.

What are some of these parallels?
  • Superman and his father have the same last name - El, which means "God" in Hebrew.
  • The original first names for Superman's parents were Mary and Joseph.
  • The villain Lex Luther sounds much like Lucifer of the Bible.
  • Superman and Jesus both experience death, resurrection and a return, or second coming.
In The Gospel According to the World's Greatest Superhero, Stephen Skelton examines these connections and other symbolic references. The book is available just in time for the release of the first new Superman movie in almost 20 years, Superman Returns, opening in theaters Wednesday, June 28. If you're a fan of Superman and enjoy creative evangelism, this book will help you point people toward Jesus and possibly reach your friends and family in a unique way through today's increasingly popular entertainment ministry.
